Locally, we have made great strides in championing the importance of Speech & Debate as a structured and intentional part of curriculum- many schools that had once dropped S/D as a class have reinstated that class, but getting students in the class to participate in tournaments or outside speeches is still a struggle.
Probably the leading factor preventing team growth is teacher/coach retention. New coaches come in with a lot of zeal, but many of them had no idea what they were getting in to when they agreed to coaching. To get them to stick around long enough to learn the ropes, and helping them to feel confident enough to defend their programs to admin is hard.
We have done a lot of mentoring, and I have hope that the next few years may lead to explosive growth in our area.
