Owasso High School

Drama/Speech & Debate department teacher is responsible for teaming with the department in providing instruction in the possible areas of theatre, stagecraft, theatre tech, speech and debate, as well as providing curricular and extracurricular opportunities for use of the learned skills in keeping with the District philosophies, procedures, policies and programs.  Teamwork and vertical alignment is a hallmark of the Owasso Public Schools program and the teaching assignment will be based on the teacher’s strengths and needs of the district. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: These statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.

Coordinates with the Director of Fine Arts, Theatre department head, and site principals to meet District curriculum goals and objectives.

  1. Works with the Theatre Department Head to ensure vertical alignment of curriculum.
  2. Organizes the instruction of theatre, stagecraft, and/or speech and debate classes based on the Oklahoma Academic Standards..
  3. Helps organize the program for assigned buildings.
    • Plans competitive activities such as OSSAA and other regional contests.
    • Coordinates and schedules plays, musicals, and festivals according to the school calendar.
    • Encourages respect for and enjoyment of public performance.
    • Stresses good sportsmanship in competition.
  4. Assumes responsibility for administration of department general and activity funds.
    • Collaborates with the department head and Fine Arts office in budgeting and requisitioning supplies, entry fees, fundraisers, etc, as well as accounting for receipt and disbursement of funds.
    • Maintains accurate inventory record of equipment, props, and costumes.
  5. Exemplifies citizenship, sportsmanship and professionalism in behavior and performance of duties.
    • Promotes community understanding through communication with parents and concern for students.
    • Remains current in the field through professional organizations, professional literature, workshops and in-service programs.
    • Complies with the position description of the classroom teacher.
  6. Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the principals and the Director of Fine Arts.
  7. Assists with special projects.
  8. All other duties as assigned by the administrator.

Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field

Valid Oklahoma Teaching Certificate in Drama/Speech and Debate

EXTRA DUTY:  In addition to the 180-day contract, will work additional hours as necessary on Extra Duty Contract.


Knowledge of overall operation of a vocal music program.  Ability to manage budget.  Knowledge of state and OSSAA policies governing drama, speech and debate, and extracurricular activities.  Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data.  Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.  Be a willing collaborator and teammate.  Strong presence in statewide and national professional organizations (I.T.S., NSDA, i.e.).  Ability to successfully lead teams and troupes at performance contests and other arts events/experiences.  Computer literate.  Strong knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and laws applicable to education and special education.  Ability to follow all district policies and procedures.  Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done.  Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators.  Ability to listen effectively.  Ability to work without supervision, and work as a team player.  Ability to document records accurately.  Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects students, families, and employees.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret English language including common educational and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions.  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
