We are thrilled to announce that Simpson College is providing free lodging for 80 students attending the 2024 National Speech & Debate Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa.

As part of the Road to Nationals, the NSDA is committed to supporting under-resourced teams in their journey to the National Tournament. We are grateful to Simpson College for providing 80 students and their coaches access to comfortable and affordable accommodations at the 2024 National Tournament.

Can anyone from the team submit an application?

No, due to the logistical nature of this opportunity, only coaches on record may submit applications. Coaches must receive clearance from school administration that this lodging opportunity meets their district’s needs for traveling and supervising students.

Can you apply for this housing opportunity if you also plan to apply for a Tate Fund (Road to Nationals) grant?

Do you have to be an NSDA member to apply?

Yes – in order to compete at Nationals, the student and school will need to be NSDA members.

How close is Simpson College to the Iowa Events Center?

The Iowa Events Center, the main location of the 2024 National Tournament, is located approximately 25-35 minutes from Simpson College. Participating school locations may be closer or further away.

How will winners be selected?

Teams will be selected for this opportunity through an application drawing.

If my team is selected but we need to decline the opportunity, when do we need to make NSDA aware?

Please notify kellie.etzel@speechanddebate.org ASAP if you are selected but unable to utilize the opportunity so that we can offer the space to another team.

What should students plan to bring with them?

  • Toiletries
  • Heavier linens if desired

What type of lodging will be provided at Simpson College?

Students will be staying in Simpson College dorm rooms.

Who should I contact if I have questions or need assistance with my application?

Will linens be provided?

Sheets will be available but it is recommended to bring a light blanket.

Will there be a cost to park at Simpson?

No, on-campus parking is free.

Are co-ed rooms available?

No, but students will be housed on co-ed floors.

Will any adults be present in the residence halls?

Yes, each team is required to bring at least one adult (who has undergone a background check) to be on the floor with their students. There will be a dedicated adult restroom and a dedicated student restroom.
